I’m afraid your rigid categories that do not admit the possibility that people’s sexuality can change and take on many forms at once does not square with lived reality. I thought the point of the gay movement was to resist people policing other people’s self-definitions.

If the Corbin Fisher guys consider themselves straight, they’d be evidently wrong if we by “straight” meant “only capable of being attracted to the same sex” or “only capable of sincerely enjoying sex with the same sex.” Some of the might be really good actors who are not sincere when they say on camera that they enjoy the sex they are having with their Corbin Fisher co-workers.

The way some people talk I get the impression that “gay” means a lot more than simply being attracted to the same sex or having/enjoying sexual activity with the same sex. A whole political mindset and community solidarity seems to be implied, and if the Corbin Fisher boys do not feel part of all that, can they really be considered “gay”?

“Bisexual” for lack of any better term serves to cover anyone who is attracted to/enjoys sex with people of both sexes.

Firstly, I said that gay men being into straight sex was fetishistic. Not straight sex on its own.

I thought the idea of faculty and obligation was rather self-explanatory. It’s about deeds versus desires. A gay man forced into a sham marriage in which he fathers several children is still a gay man. Conversely, a straight inmate who rapes his cellmate is still heterosexual.

And bisexuality not a choice? When the chips are down and the pressure is on, a “bisexual” can CHOOSE to retreat into his/her heterosexuality.

I am confused by your notion of “facultative” homo- or heterosexuality. For millennia, social norms in many cultures have forced “gay men” to function sexually with women as there have also been cultures where sexual norms have forced “straight men” to function sexually with men (often the very same cultures).

As I see what it, what we tend to consider as two different orientations, exclusive homosexuality and exclusive heterosexuality are in fact extremes, characteristic of small minorities with most people in a continuum between, capable of being attracted to both sexes, their actual behavior determined by environmental and cultural factors.

I think it’s a meaningless exercise to pin down most of these Corbin Fisher guys as either “gay” or “straight” (how could one even proceed to attempt this when what those labels mean might mean different things — does being “gay” simply mean being sexually attracted to people of the same sex or does it mean that one can only sexually pair-bond with members of the same sex?).

I understand what is at stake for gay people when the notion of bisexuality in introduced into the discussion: as you say, it undermines the idea that homosexuality is not a choice (not a “lifestyle”). Why then not also admit that bisexual orientation is not a choice either?

In any case, if we want true mutual acceptance in our societies, we should be learning to respect other people’s FREE CHOICES and not simply tolerate others “because they can’t help it.” Defining a group as genetically or biologically distinct has never been a guarantee against persecution.

There is no such thing as “bisexuality.” Only facultative homosexuality/heterosexuality. In biology, the term facultative simply means the ability to function/perform under varying conditions. Here, I use the term to mean a gay man who is able to function sexually with the opposite sex. Which I suspect is the case with most of the ACS crew (no doubt with a little help from Caverject/Cialis). The vast majority of gay men are obligate homosexuals (only able to function sexually with men). I understand that a few gay men have developed… a fetish for straight sex (much like someone might be into S&M) and ACS is meant to cater to them, but my complaint was that the girl appeared before the jump and I could see penetration even as I scrolled past the article.

Someone else wrote, “not all guys who like guys are 100% gay.” See it’s that sort of equivocation that gives straight people the idea that being gay is a choice. I mean, if you’re only “90% gay,” surely with a little coaxing/practice you can somehow get that remaining ten percent to win out. “Fake it ’til you make it.”
