Since you clearly have an issue with me, and have time and time again attacked me. Weather it be for my opinion on something current or in previous post, or because of a response to your preposterous comments. You clearly believe me to be a racist, even though i have never said anything racist, even though my comments have never reflected it. Just forgot, Fazz, how ignorant you are by saying that Italians and Finns are caucasian like you, since that is not the case, some are but there are many ethnic groups that have the Italian and Finnish nationality.

Unlike you that travel because of work, i travel out of pleasure and been to lots of parts of Europe (incluiding Finland) and i have never been harassed by no one because i respect myself and make myself be respected.

You’re right; racial stereotyping DOES stem from racism and can be placed under that heading. I didn’t make myself clear (too little sleep and no caffeine). In the US racism is a touchy term and the word carries a connotation of malicious hatred toward a race/ethnicity (and in many cases nationality, as Fazz points out). I merely meant to illuminate the fact that the previous comments do not, in fact, display such a hatred, and I made an, admittedly sloppy, attempt at making the distinction between such an emotionally-charged word “racism” and the more specific, less provocative “racial stereotyping”.

And in the case of the phrase “Italian hitman”, I would like to point out that the word “Italian” is used as an adjective to describe the hitman. The link isn’t that because he’s Italian he must be a hitman, but rather that he reminds the commenter of a very specific image of a hitman as put forth by the “Godfather” movies.

That’s all. I had no intention of provoking an argument, merely of offering an explanation for someone’s comments.

Finns and Italians are nationalities, not races; and it would be pretty stupid of me to be a racist towards these since I’m caucasian my self.

As Delian mentions it might be stereotyping; in my case influenced by my experiences. Like the fact that I was attacked recently while leaving a gay club in Stockholm, and by the language the attackers were speaking I could recognize that they were Finns.
Further the person that bullied me for being gay in highschool, and as i pointed out wanted to kill me because I was gay, was Finnish.

I’m fairly sure that we wouldn’t be having this discussion if I said that he was an Arab and that, this made him a homophobe, simply because you’ve most likely been programmed and conditioned to distrust and hate Arabs or Muslims. But you don’t know shit about what happens in the rest of the world, you don’t know the rampant homophobia in a lot of Europe.

The Finnish culture is strongly influenced by outdated masculine male roles and a hetero normality. That is a fact, which is not that widely circulated, since it looks bad on a paper on equality.

You keep telling your self that. A stereotype is just a manifestation of racism. Racism is not just limited to the race but to the cultural trates of that race. To say that he reminds him of an Italian hit man would mean that he has met every italian hit man in the world and because so, his observation is objective, but since he hasn’t then that observation is based on a racial prejudice and racism is that: a racial prejudice.

fresero, those examples aren’t true racism. They’re more racial stereotyping. Racism would be if they made a hateful remark because of the race of the model. Merely commenting on the model’s race and making a link between the race and a stereotype is not true racism, merely stereotyping. And saying that he reminds them of an Italian hitman is neither, it’s merely an observation.

A subtle distinction, but an important one.
