“I find this trend very annoying.” Hate to break it to you, but it’s not a trend. The site’s been around for a decade and they’ve always done that. Some really are the athletes they’re made out to be (wrestler, basketball player, etc) and have even gotten national recognition for it. In general, the site started with the hot fraternity guy fantasy, giving each guy a sport and often using that–Tommy in baseball uniform, Kenny in singlet, etc. When it went from Fraternity Men to Fratmen/Fratpad they became a bit more like a porn Real World (or the actual Real World–they’ve got a Fratpad guy on there!) and the sports weren’t quite so important.
Did love the “lumberjack” one. That’s not even a sport, but a vocation. Let’s have hot college student teacher, hot college pianist, and hot college chemist.

Perhaps stating the obvious here, but I think that they think there is some fantasy tied to the particular sport that these guys engage in, or the fact that they play sports at all, which I think is a veiled reassurance of their masculinity. Notice it’s never a “hot college theater club member” or “hot college gym queen who couldn’t catch a ball to save his life.” And you’re absolutely right about the missed opportunity to create a peekaboo shot. I feel like Sean Cody does that all the time. They put guys outside to play football or baseball, and it never seems to occur to them to sexualize the exterior shots, not even discreetly, not even when no one is nearby. (Those shots are always deserted in the background, so how risky could it be to show a bulge?)
