There can be other factors as well that can change the appearance of the anus. Obviously, as you mention, recent anal intercourse is one but also having recently taken a large “dump” or even very strenuous exercise especially weight lifting (squats particularly with heavy weights). Also, in the case you mention of Dawson’s crack (sorry, I couldn’t resist) it could also be the effect of having a butt plug in place for a while which performers often do to relax the anal sphincter for anal intercourse. Let me be clear. The cases I have been describing here are for a young healthy male who has been using his anus within the range of normal behavior (by normal I mean penetrating the anus with normal sized penises or objects or not). As always there are the extreme cases where routinely penetrating the anus with very large penises or objects over a period of time can change the appearance of the anus permanently.

It is a common misperception that has been passed on throughout the gay community and has become “fact” that is often used to “prove” that someone is gay or has had anal sex at some point in their lives. This myth within the gay community that one can tell if a guy has has anal sex by how the anus looks is simply that – a myth. Unless the guy has had anal sex within a hour or so, it is not possible to tell if a healthy young male has ever had anal sex just by the appearance of the anus. They vary widely. This information comes from both personal experience working in the medical field in my youth and a couple of proctologists. So your smug assumptions about his anal sexual experiences are just that – smug assumptions that have no basis in reality.
