British accents are like regional accents here in America. There’s a NYC accent, then upper New York/Connecticut accent, then a Jersey accent, Boston, etc… meanwhile in the South, there’s a Texas twang, then Mississippi/Alabama, then New Orleans has their entirely own thing.

I guess he wanted to make himself seem more exotic. Lately, I’ve noticed a lot of Spanish performers with non-Spanish names (Allen King, Josh Milk, David Sky, etc.).
