Ethical boundaries for educators and students in college are a lot greyer (imho) than those in HS. I think you could offer advice and make it clear that adults have to make their own way, and that he’s at least got sense enough to ask for input from a trusted and educated source. Perhaps, as much as anything, he’s looking to know if any such work drafted from his research could actually be submitted for credit, or would be outside allowable material at your institute…?

It depends on his reasons, if he’s doing it for the wrong ones with the excuse of “It’s for an essay.” then it can only end badly and potentially damage his mental health.
If he understands the value in his work and remains objective then it could work. Aslong as he sets a timeframe and boundaries around what he’s willing to explore, aswell as set up safety nets, he should remain unharmed.
