Hmm.. These are something to ponder on. Thanks. But honestly, I’m not one think of another person’s sexuality. Even if someone is obviously gay, if he doesn’t identify as one, I don’t treat/see him as one. That’s just me, I guess. I believe it’s up to the person how he sees himself. So long as you’re not a danger to yourself and to anyone, I’m cool with that. But thank you, really, for what you said. I’m learning a lot from people here.

Gay. Male. Multiethnic. Liberal (but not neo-liberal). Atheist. I’m quite proud of my labels… why would I want to do away with them? Some people are proud to be African-American and embrace that label. Why shouldn’t they? It’s a proud heritage. The label rightly has power. Women are proud to identify as such. The only reason to do away with labels is if they are outmoded and serve no purpose. My identifying as gay tells women around me not to bother. That’s handy.

1. Labels are only important because we give them power. The shouldn’t be important. We are PEOPLE – everything else is a descriptor, and labels should be GONE.
2. To a great extent I disagree, though I believe I agree that consent can lead to more meaning than a word possesses in and of itself. You can’t just change the word “cat” to mean “beam”, even by consensus – “cat” has a long-standing meaning.
To your last, I whole-heartedly agree. I have believed all my life that sexuality is just that when it relates to a trait – homosexuality, bisexuality, pansexuality and heterosexuality (and others) only relate to behavior. As you point out, the “norms” easily confuse when a society doesn’t openly embrace the standard deviations (as well as all the different points) and allow for contextual explanation and freedom to be okay to be different.

Not trying to be argumentative, but…

1. Labels(/identifiers) are important. Think about all the myriad labels people use and embrace in their daily lives. Black. African-American. Italian. Irish. East Asian. Male. Female. Millennial. Liberal. Conservative.

2. Individuals do not get to choose the meanings of words. That’s for the community at large to decide. If there is no mutually agreed upon definition of what “gay” is then it ceases to mean anything.

Lastly, I think people make sexuality out to be more complicated than it is. This is especially true of male sexuality. To quote from an article on the subject, “For men, arousal is orientation.” People like TimeLikeLightning muddy the waters by referencing feelings/emotions. Gay men live in a society set up to cater to the str8 male gaze. Everyday you’re told this is what you should want… honestly, I don’t blame GAY men for getting a little confused.

Awe! I missed you guys too! I think my big ahah moment was Christmas at the airport. That girl talking about being scared she’d never be able to see her husband’s eyes again.. It’s just biology – we’re just pigs, that’s all there is to it, and if the need arises and the only opportunity is a large knothole in the wall . . . well, we know what happens!

Also not kidding, I think too much emphasis (and therefore power) is given to a term which is inconsequential by its widespread use by “our community”. I’m talking about criticism of using “queer”. While, taken literally, with its source etymology and meaning being “odd”, it’s objectionable to those who are insufficiently secure to allow that being “odd” is GOOD! The words “queer” and “fag” have no power over me – they simply (like many other words which can just be conveyance of non-offensive thought or, with intent, be confrontive or objectionable) exist in context of the intent of the utterer. Am I a fag? You fucking bet I am! Am I queer? Damn right I am. Am I a cocksucker? Every chance I get! Am I a fudge-packer? Ditto. Am I a gay man? No two ways about it. Am I a man? Essentially and perpetually. Am I a Marine? Perpetually, certainly. I am all of those and more, and unless someone intends to disparage me with any term used, it makes absolutely no difference to me.

Let’s just concentrate on Wallace being well-enough adjusted that he’s not able to cope with his enjoyment of his fellow man. And this from someone who said PASS . . . I guess he’s growing on me! LOL

Wow, this is the first time i heard the term GBN. LOL! I can’t believe there are so many in betweens. I guess LGBT is a vast gray area.

Don’t ever discount GBN (Gay By Necessity) . . . LOADS of that in the military in my nearly 30 years. Of course, many of the GBNs “slid” to Curious and then to Bi and some to Gay . . . down that slippery slope called opening the mind.
