It’s an image thing. He wants to be taken seriously as an actor and director rather than simply being attractive. But hey, if it was good enough for Ryan Phillippe, Julianne Moore and countless others it’s good enough for him.

I also think he dislikes that period because he looked super gay back then. I imagine it’s the same for the earlier seasons of Supernatural when he wasn’t deepening his voice.
