That’s what I’m wondering too. I believe any time they’ve had a male companion there was also a female companion. Because naturally two men alone would be unnatural. Can you imagine if Madame Vastra and Jenny became the new companions? That would be crazy. And it would be so much fun having Nardole and Strax interacting on a regular basis.

Hmmm. Could definitely be that Bill’s arc was impacted by the plan to bring Jodie in.
Among other things, it’ll be interesting to see if the opposite sex companion tradition continues (not counting the Amy/Rory package deal).

I can’t wait for the special now. And the Broadchurch connection is too funny. Tennant’s Doctor on the same show with Smith’s companion, and they’re both interacting with the future Doctor! Kind of awesome.

But now I’m curious if maybe having a Lady Doctor is the reason lesbian Bill had to become a Cyberwoman.

I spent part of the weekend checking in on the most current Dr dirt, so it’s not like I’m that tapped in. :]
But yeah, this could be sooooo fantastic. For all that they’ve enjoyed the ongoing gag about the Dr’s frustration about not being “ginger” time and again, the moment when it hits her that she’s… her… is bound to be great.

I’m gagging over Jodie being the first person you mentioned. I hadn’t heard her name being tossed out before. I’m excited to see what she does with the role.

I always laugh when I think about how quick those female companions were to toss their men aside for the Doctor. And the Doctor has a thing for soon to be married women. And redheads. The story never ends well for those reds.

Good points. David was more of a tragic figure, in all. Lost Rose, had to wipe Donna, had that awkwardness with Martha (not my favorite companion, but gorgeous). Even had the bittersweet reunion with Sara Jane. Seems like there was a refrain with his relationships that Time Lords were doomed for heartache. And yeah, he was pissed at going…

I think Matt’s regen was easier on me because of the whole bit on Trenzalore. He led a full life on the planet. He was ready to die. But with David’s Doctor it felt more like a sacrifice, because of Wilfred. Matt’s Doctor was ready to go. David’s was pissed.

Class has its moments. If you do watch you’ll definitely become a fan of Miss Quill. She’s badass.

Jarring is a great word for the transition from Matt to Peter; in fact, it’s about like if their ages were speeds in a car… moving suddenly 40+ mph (or km/h, if you prefer) faster would be similarly startling. Part of me thought, since we’d gone successively younger and “prettier” from Christopher to David to Matt (who I definitely agree is cute), they decided to go completely the other direction. Not that Peter is ugly… just a true change of pace.
I thought Matt’s regen was harder, but David’s was rough. With David’s farewell tour, where everyone else seemed to have their lives in order, it almost seemed okay, that he’d done right by the people who loved him, and it was time. Somehow, despite the fact we got 3 great seasons with Matt, I still felt like it was too soon… I wanted more.
I’m not savvy to Class. Had to look it up when you mentioned it, and the web is not kind to that spinoff. Is it worth it?

I was the same way with Matt. It took me a bit to start loving him (and realizing he was a hottie). I think the Matt to Peter transition was also hard because of the age difference. It was jarring to go from one extreme to another (I still think that was part of the reason for coming up with the War Doctor). I agree, I loved Peter’s Doctor with River, which I didn’t think I would. But, it’s River. You’re going to like her with anyone.

I still can’t decide if which regen was the most brutal, David or Matt. They were both so emotionally draining. With Matt’s I still may have been dealing with some snark feelings about the regen workaround. I can’t anticipate how I’ll feel about Peter’s departure.

With respect to Bill, it’s funny how this series and Class both had similar endings for a main character. And speaking of Class, I was shocked about the “arrival” reveal. I’m definitely expecting the NuDoctor to make a return appearance now.

With you on the Capaldi transition. I loved me some Matt Smith (although he too had to work a bit to win me over after David), and it was hard to let go. But Peter’s such a great actor and had his own flair… wearable technology, among other things… so I came around. Plus, his dynamic with River in those early episodes was special in its own way.
I don’t expect the imminent departure to tug at my heart as much this time, the way Matt’s last moments when they brought back the vision of Amy STILL get me when I see that scene. But then the writers have increasingly played up the unique tragedy of each transition since the reboot, so they might get me again. Bastards.

I was on the fence about Bill in the beginning but she quickly won me over. And I’m sad to see Peter go, as it took me a little while to warm up to his Doctor. Mainly because I hated how antagonistic the relationship with Clara was during that first year or so. They were both insufferable.

Since Peter’s incarnation heavily inferred the Doctor can regen into someone he has come into contact with, I wonder if they would consider Michelle Gomez. It’s probably way too soon and not enough distance from the Missy character, but perhaps that’s what that storyline was all about. I’ll have to remember to watch the match tomorrow for the announcement.

I’m still very torn on who I even want in the next Dr.
