Yeah, the gay gene is a very popular theory, and I hope we get closer to understanding it someday. The advances we've made in science is simply awe inspiring. Not only can doctors determine the sex of a fetus at 13/14 weeks, but they can actually look at each individual unfertilized egg inside of the female and determine the sex of the would-be embryo. This is particularly helpful and potentially life-saving because some hereditary defects only present themselves in males/females, and they can virtually eliminate any risk of an embryo carrying it by fertilizing 'safe' eggs through in vitro fertilization. I suspect, if there were a gay gene, it could potentially work in a similar way. Which, again, begs the question- is that a good or bad thing? I go back and forth. The 'X-Men' universe is often said to be an allegory for how the LGBT community is viewed by the rest of the world. One particular on-going storyline is the 'cure' for mutants being developed and whether the mutants should want to be cured in the first place.

As you could probably tell, I love debate, especially topics like religion and politics, and I discuss them with people often, if they are willing to discuss them. Even in my close group of friends we all disagree to varying degrees, but I think that makes it all the more fun. Life would be so boring if we all held the same beliefs.

A lot of people think debating someone is a way for you to convince someone they are wrong and you are right, but what often comes out of debate is both parties leave feeling more confident and knowledgable in their position. You might find that engaging in a discussion with an atheist doesn't tempt you to abandon your faith, but instead make your faith stronger. I know I've taken a MUCH bigger interest in learning about religion, particularly Christianity, now that I've decided I don't buy it anymore. It's funny how that happens. My aim is never to convince someone to abandon their faith, but for them to understand why they believe it. I've learned a lot from people of faith who came to their understanding of their higher power on their own instead of just believing what they're told because they think that's what they should do.

In reply to <a href="https://www.waybig.com/blog/2018/03/18/sean-cody-jax/#comment-741156">Anonymous</a>.

I’m also doing a bit of research on this topic. Even though I don’t have a twin or a sibling period I’m still interested on how it all works.

You’re going to have to forgive my ignorance cause I just recently starting researching all of this and it’s still new to me. But I have always wondered why one sibling was gay and the other was straight. For the longest of time I thought every human was born straight and chose those different lifestyles. I was taught at a young age that it was a sin and “those people” were committing sins on their own. Those damn Catholic schools.

It wasn’t until I came out to my progressive friends as bi and reevaluated my way of thinking that I realized that it wasn’t a choice. Also my uncle came out recently and we had a private conversation about how he suffered for more than 30 years with his sexuality. He is actually more masculine then my father which is crazy now that I think about it. He’s the definition of a ‘alpha male.’ That only confused me more which prompted me to look more into this topic.

I read an article on Latimes that stated “For men, new research suggest that clues to sexual orientation may lie not just in the genes, but in the spaces between the DNA, where molecular mark Instrcut genes where to turn on and off and how strongly to express themselves.” I read that entire article and and left with more questions then answers. One thing that did peak my interest though, was the research done by a biologist by the name Tuck C. Ngun. Basically he studied the genetic material of 47 pairs of identical male twins, he identified “epigenetic marks” in nine areas of the human genome that are strongly linked to male homosexuality. He would gone on to say the presence of those distinct molecular marks can predict homosexuality with an accuracy of close to 70%.

That’s pretty much what my co-worker and you said. However I would then read another article from another site that would completely dismiss those claims. Now of course those articles, while well written, weren’t written by professionals in that particular field.

By then that begs the question that u asked about men that are in my position. I have zero siblings but is Bisexual. For that I went online and found this place called ‘Bisexual Resource Center’ their site was very helpful and open my mind to a lot of different things about people in my community. And while that’s nice, you will also have those that call Bisexual being a phase or you’re just gay but too afraid to fully come out. Which can be really confusing for a 15 year old having feelings for his basketball teammate and the cheerleader.

Let’s get dark:
I was feed a lot of stuff while attending Catholic Church. These people even went as so far as saying the reason for someone turning out gay is because they were molested by the same sex. That asinine theory was immediately debunked when I came out to friends at 14. I was never touched by my dad or any of the male adults in my family. I feel like Science plays a major part in ones sexual identity. That can be the only logical explanation to why one sibling comes out gay and the other straight. Yes, I am a believer of a higher power, but no, I don’t feel like that higher power plays any part of ones sexuality.

I do have another question though. Would that same percentage for identical twins be the same for fraternal twins? My co-worker and his bothers are all identical.

My conclusion:
I feel like it’s a lot more then we really know. I feel like we will never fully know the truth. It’s so many different theories and all of those theories are logical. For me, I will continue to look into it and see what makes more sense. I’m majoring in Psychology but don’t know diddly-squat about this. Different fields, but it’s all Sciene and medicine.

I appreciate your feedback. It’s was a lot ( lol ) but I love having conversations that picks at my brain.

You have a twin right? The reason I ask is because I had this deep discussion with this guy at my job who is a triplet. To make a long story short, we got into sexuality. He was telling me that he and one of the other triplets were gay, but their third was straight. I didn't believe him and debated him that was impossible for one or more to be gay and the third being completely straight. I even did my Googles to see if it was possible, and wasn't 100% convince. Then I remembered you ( I hope it was you or this will be awkward ) mentioning something about having a twin in a post. And, you're the only other person that I know that's a twin.
