Buddy Wild doesn’t necessarily fit the mold of our typical Broke Straight Boy, but we’re excited about that and we know he’s got a lot to offer here. Growing up in rural Missouri taught Buddy how to overcome challenges, especially those related to his race, and those challenges have led him create his own identity, shattering the typical African American stereotypes. Adopted and coming from a conservative family, he was a little bit of a trouble maker in his youth, but you wouldn’t guess so looking at the sweet and poised young man sitting with us today! Finding his way to BSB, he’s of course here for the money, but also here to broaden his horizons and take a chance on something new, and we can’t wait to see what he learns about himself with us!

This was taken from the writeup of Buddy’s BTS vid. What even is this? I’m surprised they didn’t throw in a “He speaks so well!” for further emphasis. Don’t try to act like you’re part of the change when you’re part of the problem. And I can’t tell what’s more troubling, the idea that they possibly gave him the first name “Buddy” or that he came up with it on his own. Fucked up either way. The interview itself was super sloppy. Everything from Sha’s “interview style sitdown” with Buddy (because of course we need one of the heads of the studio to give his Caucasian stamp of approval and literally petition for Buddy to have a chance before the members dig out their sheets and crosses) to Buddy playing into this garbage by listing all the ways he doesn’t fit the preconceived notions about Black models. Look, Buddy is cute and everything, but I just don’t know if I can stomach watching this obvious tap dance audition for the role of BSB House Negro. It’s 2018. We shouldn’t be doing this bullshit. We shouldn’t have to.

Makes me wonder how they’re going to address Axel’s arrival. Something tells me it won’t be handled in the same shitty way. But I’d love to be proven wrong.
