I always read your comments. Yeah, I've been slowly getting better. My point was though that I somehow HALLUCINATED a birthday, and the only explanation for that must be my state of being after I got out of the hospital. I had not been on any mind altering drugs. Mostly just massive doses of antibiotics for a week, along with steroids and a loud, gushing flow of oxygen being pumped into my lungs around the clock. I had picked up a killer flu virus that a hospital doctor said was the worst he had seen in 40 years...AND PNEUMONIA! Within a short period of time, before I even suspected I was more than just "under the weather", my lungs had become so congested that my body was no longer getting enough oxygen in my blood to function. I could not even stand up, as I found out. So, I ended up on the bathroom floor, completely unable to get up. My roommate, luckily, was not out of town as he often is and he called 911. I remained tired and weak for months, crying a lot, and sometimes I'd be sitting in a chair and suddenly drift off into a deep sleep for a few moments. So, I guess I must have lost consciousness while watching CMBYN, for a few moments, and dreamed Elio had a birthday. And what a nice birthday he had with cake and everything. PITIFUL! LOL

Completely agree. Being attracted to a 16 year old who is post-pubescent is not pedophilia where the latter would be attracted to a 6 year old. 16 and 6 are worlds apart in physical, social and emotional development.

That said we (humans) have created a variety of rules and laws to maintain structure and patterns of normative behavior that create safe environments for all. Just as we do not allow bigger/smarter humans to rob and kill weaker humans, we recognize that 14 is too young to emotionally be prepared to manage a healthy stable equal relationship with a 40 year old. So society protects that class of people we call adolescents/teenagers.

Aw, I'm sorry, I didn't know you were sick--hope you're better!

I am also a massive fan of CMBYN--I can see why people were uncomfortable with the movie though...espceilly since it was released at the hight of the Me Too movement in Hollywood and Kevin Spacey representing us gay men in the worst way possible.

Read my comments in this thread with Scrapple though. The book is soooo much better. I read it years ago and it easily became one of my favorite books. The movie is beautifully shot and Chalamet was amazing, but the story didn't convey to film as well as I had hoped. Part two might fill/fix some of the holes, but I doubt it. You should read the book or at least listen to the audio tape if you like the story, it will make you like it even more.

Fair enough. And my backlash isn’t directed at you. I just thought your choice of words was poor. Americans just don’t get that there’s a huge gulf of moral and emotional ground between pre- and post-pubescent. By design, by nature, by instinct — humans are able to have sex after puberty. It does not mean all are emotionally ready or suited to be sexually active. But it should not be treated as an abominable taboo that no one should contemplate or discuss. And yes, Sassy Princess’ pedo reference was ignorant and offensive. Which Capello capably made clear.

You are right. In my defense I was literally dying last March and when I got out of the hospital among the things I wanted to do was see, Call Me By Your Name, and Love Simon. Needless to say I was tired and not yet completely myself, so I (somehow) very fuzzily thought a birthday had occurred in CMBYN. But, as I already wrote, the age of consent is 14 in Italy, and it was that at the time period of the movie as well. It seems the movie brought up issues in some that it did not bring up in me. I just enjoyed so much the exquisitely portrayed emotional journeys Elio and Oliver were on, and the games they played with themselves and one another as they both found their way to how they felt and were FINALLY able to bask in the joy and enjoyment of that. And now Elio has learned about life and love, and has grown and knows his truth. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/7a431b406d1e6ada1ac19270b2c2d1bdd777c5d583ffe8171c2eac1ad89fa0c5.gif

Yeah, the movie does the story some disservice, but that always happens when they have to shorten a story for a movie. We will see what they do with this part two in the works...I suppose they can pull the story together more.

I would actually recommend reading the book, because it is outstanding, or at least listen to the audio tape so you can hear Armie Hammer describe cumming in a guys ass.

I've read it and seen it. As well as Call Me by Your Name, Lolita, etc.. You don't know where he lived at the time, as I don't.

The point of my comment was to address @sassyprincess69:disqus and their judgment of the child in the situation, regardless of the regions laws.

No, the movie covers 6 weeks and Elio was 17 the entire time, never 16. Oliver does say that and they have that conversation, but the age does not change.

I never understood why they cast Armie in that role when he in no way looks like he's 27.

That's unfortunate that the movie somewhat romanticizes this relationship without showing the fallout. And from what you've said, that fallout seems to be clear.

I would agree with that, to an extent. But as was the case with Elio, even though he had developed mentally, he still wasn't developed emotionally. He was still trying to figure out who he was and what he wanted. Oliver already knew all that stuff.

Yeah, that side-eye was warranted. People who go after partners that much younger have issues.

Moreover, there's a few regulars been around here for a long, long time that absolutely think that the legal age to appear in porn should be raised because 18 year olds are too immature and many of them are still in high school, which is another thing they wish to make illegal. No one in high school allowed in porn, they posit. As if the line in the sand legal concept of eighteen years of age isn't complicated enough, let's add more rules.

It is an enjoyable movie on many levels. The understandings (and
confession) that Elio's father gives him, at the end, is something that
needs to be watched again and again. It is so poignant and raw and
beautiful. BUT, the movie is also fun. The flirting is so enjoyable to
watch. Elio is trying to be straight, but in walks Armie! LOL Trying
to be straight then becomes a lot harder, until it becomes impossible. Poor Elio is abruptly thrown onto an emotional roller coaster he has never taken a ride on before. The movie does quite a masterful job dealing with all kinds of emotional complexities. SEE IT! SEE IT! SEE IT! https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/4fb3340f5eadcd796dd7f8e4b994ead0857807acc83fc927222ea16f7df729cf.gif
