Thanks. In retrospect, a lot of the writing was really bad. And who could forget the three 5-minute music montages per episode? Once in a while, they would have a decent storyline. Like “Submersion” where Mitch makes a split-second decision over which of two drowning brothers to save after he befriended them earlier.

By chance, have you ever seen “The Paperboy”? It’s this wonderful direct-to-video release from 1994 starring Alexandra Paul. She plays this MILF whose mother dies and she comes back home to tend to her estate. The mother was actually killed by the 14 year old neighbor boy, who has a crush on her that borders on obsession, but he also wants her to be his mother. Parts of the movie are really twisted, but there’s also some wonderful writing, suspense and occasional humor. The boy that played the actor did a great job. He constantly navigates between neglected child willing to please and a psychotic terror that takes out everything in his path. It’s a hidden gem that used to get played on the USA network back in the 90’s, when they showed all sorts of wonderful shit. I have it on dvd somewhere. It’s worth tracking down if you’re ever bored.

You’re right. I can’t believe I forgot that because I even remember Mitch shouting “JJJJIIIIILLLLL!!!!” The shark dragged her under. She was rescued and was recovering in the hospital and seemed to be recuperating and then she got a blood embolism and died.

And who could forget Stephanie (Alexandra Paul) surviving being shot, melanoma skin cancer (that had spread), sharks, bombs, ice cold waters, hypothermia, a crazy environmental terrorist and Lord knows what else, only to decide that, when a ship mast is hurling towards you, the best course of action is to STAND DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF IT and try to ward it off with your arms. That was so out of character for her.

Oh God, I forgot about Kelly Slater. He was definitely hot. Jaason Simmons (who is gay IRL) certainly wasn’t bad looking either. I thought Chokachi was good looking in a bland sort of way. I haven’t seen too m uch of the real early years, but I did see the one where Shauni died after a shark attack. She was helping these 4 boys into a raft in the ocean (what the fuck were they doing out there?) and the shark dragged her around for awhile. That was a pretty horrific scene — and strangely relatable to today. Eddie (Billy Warlock) was fine as well.

You’re right. I know a lot more about John Nelson than John Cort. With the latter, I basically only watched the bikini scenes and then fast forwarded through the rest. The soundtrack to his first sexy montage (No One Else) has been stuck in my head for 25 years.

I actually remember him, but I thought his name was Cort. Also, I don’t think it was glaucoma, but some eye disease related to being exposed to the sunlight too much (it should be noted he’s not wearing sunglasses there). I remember he was supposed to lose his sight, but I also remember that never happening. I checked and “Blindside” was a 1993 episode, and he appeared in 2 more episodes the following 2 years and was apparently fine. Well, writing was never really their strong suit.

My daddy issues actually came later than Baywatch. Before it was a daddy thing, it was a hairy chest thing, so I did like David but when he was a little younger.

If we’re talking Baywatch and obsessions, I liked several guys (David Chokachi comes to mind), but was obsessed over a guy you wouldn’t even know because he was barely on it. Season 1 featured a guy named John Cord (John Allen Nelson). I’ve been obsessed with him since before I could masturbate. There is no one on the planet I have longed for more. Not Vander, not Daniel, not Tomas, not Angus (who is aging like a porterhouse steak — I pray his new scene appears here). Those vicious motherfuckers gave his character glaucoma, but at least they “cured” him for the reunion movie.
