What was the dish on Austony… I know it wasn’t messy, but did Romero ever explain why he left porn? Did he leave AW to get away from porn or vice versa?

I think it might’ve been a combination. I think Austin may have hinted at some things early on but I don’t recall anything specific. Austin always struck me as someone who could be really warm one minute and really cold the next. Anthony disappeared after that and hasn’t popped up since. I think he needed a clean break from everything.

That was how I was remembering it, but I had checked the sites to be sure. Austin was at Next Door in 2008, which I think he went straight there after Sean Cody rejected him. AZ didn’t launch until 2011/12 with their cam project, which eventually became the site. It was a pretty successful launch and I think it certainly influenced Austin’s other collabs with Randy Blue and the attempted one with Corbin Fisher. Wasn’t Gay Hoopla in the mix at one point? Austin and JJ Swift worked together a bit and there was speculation at one point that JJ might co-partner with Austin after leaving GH.

This was actually a fun trip down porn memory lane. I was shocked the AZ site was still up. I had forgotten how many hot guys they worked with and how many went on to become stars in their own right. And to think, this was a site started by two friends who identified as straight…and lived together…and fucked each other. Austin and Zane’s breakup was way messier than Austin and Anthony’s. Go figure.

The chronology with AW was that he left Next Door abruptly and unhappily, did a “watch this space” collaboration with AZ (who had their own major psycho dramas, one of them wrote an intriguing tell all about it) to hype GISP, which at the time was just an amateur pin-up athletic gear site for hot models (or escorts) to promote themselves (guess Austin and Anthony, then his business and romantic partner wanted some brand recognition and ready-made viewership). It was a pretty successful move. They continued to promote while being guest-hosted at CockyBoys for a spell before launching the revamped GISP. Shortly after that Austin and Anthony parted ways, sadly, and Anthony left the business altogether. Wilde had his ups and downs, but generally delivers a pretty solid product, along with CB and LE the most consistent in the biz, I would say. He courts a certain amount of controversy in some of his model choices, but since his prolonged hiatus/rehab stint, the site has been strong, delivering three good updates per month.

One studio can’t provide enough work for most performers. And if you’re smart, you figure that people don’t want to see you in every scene on your own site (Dominic Pacific take note). So it makes sense to spread it around, provided you’re not doing utter crap. I agree with Scrapple, Wolf has kept it together, even if most of his work is out of my taste range. At least in this scene, there’s some isolated M/M business going on.

I take it as a sign of a business as being neither successful or at a level of independent operation. Appearing in scenes yielding residuals for what are essentially competing companies doesn’t sound like a smart move. The flat rate Wolf Hudson is paid passes to another performer on his own set. Keep a fan base with you while you grow and demonstrate how your material offers more. Austin Wilde did that. Aside from a very early scene with AustinZane fans couldn’t see him anywhere else, and GISP had two and a half years of solid production before the Randy Blue collaboration. Both studios benefited from that scene.

Lance Hart appears at other studios, but he’s managed to keep ManUpFilms distinctive. Though the scenes – and casts – at BiPhoria and Devil’s Films bisexual releases are… basically the same. (Dominic Pacifico finally calmed his ass down and is focused on RawHole in Brazil. Before that he was using his $20,000+ RED digital cinema camera for other studios. I wonder if he and Casey Everett are still together.)

But I understand what you’re saying. There must be something going on that makes it work for everybody.

I thought Austin was already working with Next Door by the time Austin and Zane got their site off the ground. Maybe I’m remembering that wrong because SCM was ages ago and I’m blanking on if those two started AZ right after they left or some time after.

But back to the main question, there’s also the issue of studio/site owners who still want to do films. Any time that happens you’ll see people cry about how skeevy it is for the person who is writing the checks to be fucking models. Even Austin gets that when he sporadically pops up in a vid. So for some like Lance who still want to perform on camera, working for other studios takes that element off the table.

It’s personal greed as well. Some of them just want their cake and eat it too. “I luvz Womenz” but I’ll take any opportunity to fuck a guy on camera.

Fast food porn. They need quantity not quality. Most of their content is just gonna get posted on their tube websites anyway and that’s where the REAL money is.

A lot of them do it. Lance Hart, Dominic Pacifico. It’s true on the straight side as well. Not only are you diversifying revenue streams, but you’re networking at the same time.
