The words are not offensive by themselves. But in the context of 1) a lie and 2) a police call the perfectly acceptable words “African American man” became a dangerous threat.

The context of Sean Cody is a company that actually had many models who weren’t white when they began and decided to rebrand itself as almost all white. The context of Sean Cody is a company that does not mention the complexion of their white models, ever. No ivory cuties. No milks skin. So, this is an example of racism. Not the most important one in the world. But an example. And anyone who wasn’t blinded by defensiveness could have gotten that by now.

One of the manifestations of an unequal system is the refusal to believe people when they testify. In your case, your arrogance in claiming that you know better than black people (what is racist, what is important, whether we need a leader, and who those leaders should be) is only equalled by your inability to grasp the notion of context. Everybody knows that the word ebony, in isolation, is not racist. But imagine (if you can) the difference between Donald Trump calling a woman a b****, and some queens on Drag Race saying it to each other in love and humor. Same word. Different context. He did not do so as an insult to his community. He chose that word as being much more beautiful than Black, and it has additional meanings. Ebony wood is DURABLE and PRIZED and LUSTROUS. And that is how he saw his community and wanted his community to see itself. Black just means the darkest of the colors. If that is the word that dark skinned people prefer using, then that is the word they prefer using and I certainly have no interest in waging a campaign against that. But Ebony never has been a “disparaging” word. That is my point and your question has been answered many times over. But, you want the answer to be worded EXACTLY as you want it worded and can’t seem to process words that are not EXACTLY as that. That is on you, not me. If you think yourself to be only the darkest of colors, then that is how you see yourself to be. If you see yourself to be DURABLE and PRIZED and LUSTROUS, then you won’t be offended by a word that implies that and can forgive John Johnson for seeing you as that as well.

Fine, fine, fine. But the question remains unanswered. Where are the “Ebony Lives Matter” signs? How about the “ebonyout” social media campaigns? After all, you said black people call ourselves ebony and that you know this for a fact because–despite what numerous black people here told you–Google showed you a bunch of Ebony magazine covers.

I would hope that, whatever your feelings towards me or any other black poster here, you have at least come down off that particular ledge. It’s an especially bad look right now to be telling black people that you know what is racist and what isn’t better than we do–you know, we who are the actual targets of it in its physical, emotional, economic and verbal forms.
