Another souvenir, a tribute set that I mixed. This wasn’t from the same year though — I’m certain the Starburst night was in 2000 and this was 1999.

Anderson used to go to Roxy all the time. I mean all the time. He was on World News Now at that point, so he had to be a night owl anyway — it was ABC’s overnight broadcast, and no one besides college kids and people with weird hours even knew who those people were. On Monday mornings, I used to write these little narratives of my weekends that I emailed to my friends. I wish I still had them so I could just cut and paste, but there was no Gmail back then and almost nothing resembling cloud storage.

But the gist is that I could tell that he was a very private person despite going to a club like that. He tended to socialize only with the people he already knew. And for a long time, he had the same muscular hairy chested boyfriend who went there with him each time, and the bf was always shirtless and Anderson was always fully dressed. (He hadn’t started working out yet, so he was handsome but not jacked. By the time he had a great body, I don’t think he was going out anymore at all, but then I wasn’t going to New York as much either.) Nothing that significant ever happened because I wasn’t exaggerating — he literally never registered my existence, but in my emails he was like the little red-haired girl in the Peanuts cartoons, an elusive love object.

So I would do little things to stalk him just for a funny email story, primarily dancing as close to him as possible while also pretending not to notice he was there. My best night was in the year 2000, Victor Calderone was spinning, and at one point I could even recite for you the names of the songs he spun. (The music was always the most important element of the email sagas.) Anderson still never acknowledged me, but I got embraced by all of his friends. They passed a joint around, and Anderson took a toke and passed it to a guy who passed it to me. I never did drugs, ever, but that was the only time I was tempted. I would have been doing it for the Anderson spit rather than the high, but I passed it to the next guy without doing anything with it. Later that night (which was a sweltering night), I pulled an unopened pack of Starburst fruit chews out of my pocket and offered it to the group, which made them LOVE me (because it really was a “burst of refreshing fruit flavor” on a night when we were all ready to pass out from the heat). A few weeks later, I even danced with that hairy muscle boyfriend — not just face to face but chest to chest, feeling up all those sweaty muscles. But he was there alone that night and it turned out he and Anderson had broken up. I’m not even sure I knew his name then but I definitely don’t know it now.

I had even funnier and more significant encounters with Dean “Mayhem” Winters, Lee Tergesen, and Chris Meloni, all of whom were on Oz at the time. And an encounter with Meg Ryan, of all people. But it’s so time consuming typing this all out. I wish I had a podcast, lol! This is one of my many souvenirs from that era. I even have the flier from the Meloni/Tergesen/Winters night. I’m convinced Dean is gay, but he didn’t appear to be very open about it even on the dance floor, and he never came out publicly. Anderson was never closeted per se, but I’m glad he came out publicly because until you say it, that is a kind of closet.
