I do think envy is part of it, but I think scorn is the bigger part. It is a very common human (though not humane) response to one person approaching another sexually (a) to make judgments about whether the that one person “deserves” to make that approach, and (b) to become judgmental or even hostile to the person they consider undeserving. I read that behavior as role playing, and role playing rarely offends me. But other people bring much more judgment to perceptions of beauty and to the politics of role playing.
