It’s such a shame that most vintage and classic porn in digitized form has an awfully bad video quality. Sometimes it really is an effort to watch it. If the quality would be good, I wouldn’t morn if all the modern gay porn vanished into thin air. Enough material to enjoy until eternity.

I never thought about a distinction between vintage and classic but that’s interesting. I was definitely fond of the studio system. I still am to an extent, though the genius era of Sean Cody is maybe the only time that porn consistently combined studio production values with the spontaneity of amateur sex. Beyond that, studios are frustratingly formulaic in a way that was harder to notice when porn was less abundant (and when I obviously was less jaded).

I believe it remains my favorite feature length movie of all time from a sexual standpoint. Every scene in it has been a favorite scene of mine at some point in my life! That’s very interesting. Steve Scott is not someone I would have been conscious enough to cite even though I know the name when I see it. I was a fan of Gold Rush Boys, which was a very good and creative movie. I thought I also knew the title Doing It, but I was confusing it with Getting It, and amazing 1985 movie starring Jim Bentley. Had seen the name 2×10 before, and I just googled and was pleasantly surprised that the first scene I watched involved Lee Ryder delivering a great cum-from-fucking ending. That AIDS crisis, however, created a new demand for safer sexual outlets: VCRs and a bottle of lotion.
I guess it depends on how you define your Porn eras. For me, vintage is pre-80s. A lot of 8mm and 16mm unsynched (or poorly synched) productions filming in and around LA, SF and a variety of Californian military bases. Distributor- more than studio-oriented: LeSalon, Buckshot, Nova, Bijou, etc.
Leo and Lance marks the transition from one era to the next. 80s pre-condom and 86-onward and 90s post-condom (the latter all on video, and yes, to its detriment) I consider classic, because it was the height of the studio system: Falcon, Catalina (originally Higgins, but then it devolved into Chi Chi’s crap factory after Higgins decamped to Amsterdam, then Prague, providing a conduit for European porn beyond Cadinot), Vivid, Kristen Bjorn (expanding our vistas to Quebec and the Southern Hemisphere), Colt (picking up where Buckshot left off), Hot House, Jet Set, Raging Stallion, Studio2000, AllWorlds, etc. Not to mention an explosion of fetish companies, although much harder to rent at your local WeHo Video West outlet.
Everything after that is 21st century, older or newer, with 2010 marking the shift to mainstream condom-free porn. A bunch of German, French and Eastern (Czech, Hungarian and Russian) “studios” emerged, a few of which are still around today (Bel Ami’s Georges Duroy got his start in the early 90s providing content for Falcon Int’l that was unimaginable before the Berlin Wall came down), but a re-orientation in the US to site-based online amateur stuff (the rise of SC and CF, RB, College Dudes, CM… and BM and MAP in the UK) spells the end of studio-produced and distributed VHS/DVD porn.
