Pornstars looking at the camera in the middle of a scene is my least favorite thing behind men fucking in Timberland boots. To me, it calls attention to the idea that the performers are more into the paycheck than the sex if they are mugging for the camera instead of looking at each other. But it is different when done well, and I know what you’re saying about how they can connect to the viewer. I guess the subtle difference is do they look like they’re posing for a selfie, or do they look like they are in the throes of an orgasm and in that moment, they just happen to lock eyes with me?

The problem with Johnny is that he always looked like he was trying to make the scene about him. The bottoms that I like are there to make the top look like the stud.

I always thought it was mostly in response to BelAmi's Night Scene series (now discontinued) which directed the light exclusively on the performers, highlighting the sharp definition of their muscular torsos, and focussed the viewer's attention on the intensity of the erotic interplay.
In CF's case this was accentuated by the performers' frequent glances at the camera, as if inviting the viewer to join their shrouded intimacy.
I've found that when I watch my favourite performers in one of these scenes, in total darkness, the experience can reach a sublime sexual communion, without any need for drugs or other stimulants.

YES!! Actually, I was against this series from day one because I thought it was just throwing in the towel in terms of trying to compete with tube sites. Younger porn consumers are, in my estimation, so conditioned by amateur content that even the pros have to fake that look in order to be accepted. But I had to admit once I actually watched that.they were doing more than just changing the lighting. It was a meaningful creative choice to make CF feel more like the very early edgy days of Treasure Island Media (before "edgy" deteriorated into "sketchy"), when it was about capturing a "cum crazed" fantasy. (What FraternityX should have been but never really was.) Always thought that fantasy was a little bit about drugs, and that's what else turned me off about these scenes, but they were often genuinely intense and sexy.

The irony is that CF scenes apart from this After Dark series have improved their lighting compared to recent years.
