You may not have them in your society in the same way (or the long shameful legacy we have in the US), but you're still saddled with a European colonial origin story that has evolved with the shared (or comparable) tradition of painting, history, literature etc. And a few painful chapters of your own, even if they're not romanticized (or fetishized) in the same way.
