I googled how you want to be treated and I couldn’t find anything that says Bair doesn’t like to be called an Overseer or that Overseer is offensive to white people who claim they support black people, so I figured it was ok. There is simply no argument. There are black people who object to the repeated use of skin color to identify black models. It doesn’t matter whether we are here on WB, at Ebony magazine, or on the moon. We don’t all have to be unanimous. And we don’t have to put it on Google where you can find it. We have said it. But somehow you know better than black people what is good for us, what hurts us. Which is why you are such a supporter of our community.

It is your imagined narrative that I do not know the ugliness of the Confederate Flag to your Community, and to those people, like myself, who support your community. That is not something I need to be told. I hated and resented the Statue of Robert E. Lee that I had to look at every time I walked down Boulevard Ave in Richmond VA, LONG LONG LONG before such statues became an expressed issue and were no longer seen as something that must continue to be endured. It was how she kept in touch with HER Community and it helped her to feel connected to it while she had to move around in the WHITE WORLD she lived in.

When there is an interracial scene ONE will be Ebony and ONE will be White. Whether you like it or not, dark skin is an outstanding and beautiful feature. When Meryl Streep is standing beside Viola Davis, where do our eyes go? Who looks magnificent and who looks washed out? Answer that question TO YOURSELF and then you might be on your way to EMBRACING YOUR EBONY!

So, why is it that you mistrust the many people (some Black but not all) who have told you how we feel about the Confederate flag tattoo and the constant mentioning of nonwhite models’ color, but you are sensitive to how (your imaginary version) of Zane might feel when people say his tattoo is racist? You protect one and attack the other. Why?

There’s a little problem with the Golden Rule. Not everyone wants to be treated as you do. So it winds up being better to treat people the way they want to be treated, instead of the way you want to be treated. The whole world is not made of copies of v us.

You have not treated respectfully any of us who don’t want to have our not-white color mentioned every moment or our existence and point-of-view ignored by our government or by companies we patronize. It is convenient for you that you get to be the judge of what counts as supportive, what counts as racism, etc. We don’t agree. But you can’t hear it.

You are aware of projecting, aren’t you? You are projecting onto me how YOU are. YOU don’t listen. Exhibit A is the post I am replying to. I NEVER wrote that I am sensitive to everyone or everything. I explained in the ways that I am sensitive. I DREAD seeing someone
getting hurt or in OBVIOUS pain because I know I will be feeling that awful and icky pain reaction to the hurt or pain I am witnessing. If I am in the room with you, and you stump your toe, I will feel this awful and icky pain all the way down my body that will stop me in my tracks, for several moments. If you are cutting yourself with a knife at this moment, I feel nothing. I am not a witness to it. If I am in a room with you, and I absolutely despise you, I would not verbally torment you or allow anyone else to. I would feel it as if they were verbally
tormenting me. The Golden Rule thing is innate within me. I would despise you and feel protective of you at the same moment. I am CURSED with some sort of empathetic reaction to physical or emotional pain that I may be witnessing, whether in person or on a screen. It is not about me choosing to walk in someone shoes at that moment. The damn shoes get jammed onto me. But other than those more DRAMATIC occurrences I would have no idea how you might be feeling and would not be sensitive to you. If I were in the same room with you I would feel nothing but confusion because I would desperately want to know your truth and could not trust that you are giving it to me. I greatly mistrust people. I am autistic in that way. Now, did you listen to that or were you busy thinking about how you can grumble, argue and squabble about what I just wrote and tell me that my truth is not my truth but instead what you decide my truth to be is my truth?

Please stop using gifs of black people to represent yourself. It’s especially jarring and distasteful since you are doing it in a misguided effort to tell black people how we should feel about SC’s crappy racial politics. You don’t speak as, for, or with black people… so don’t use our images to ventriloquize your voice. It’s called digital blackface, and it’s not cool.
