I think it has a lot to do with the fact that porn is more about yearning and unfulfilled fantasies than maybe any other industry. I really can’t think of another example of where a consumer would approach a lay person (no pun intended — I mean as opposed to a professional like a lawyer or a psychiatrist) to fulfill emotional hunger. Other aspects of the entertainment industry perform a similar function, but without the baggage of shame.
