How do you get from “won’t have sex with men” to “doesn’t quite think of gay men as men”? I won’t have sex with women, but that doesn’t mean I don’t regard them as women.

You use the word “playful” which is not how I think of sex at all. It’s not lighthearted. That contributes to (but is not the only reason) why I detest MEN scenes, but I also find straight porn and solo streaking scenes irritating when the aim is to turn male nudity into a joke. (This is a tangent, but I think such scenes really are an anxiety toward male sexuality expressed in an immature way, laughing to camouflage fear and discomfort. LOL, if I ever saw that on Brazzers, I would explode. And I totally take your point. I meant for my comment to imply sympathy for guys who aren’t into straight porn. I think it helped that when I was little, my dad’s magazines in the back of his closet were straight, and I’m old enough not to have had any options. I didn’t see guy on guy action until my sophomore year of college. I’m gay and consume straight porn, and it has been a blessing. For most (not all) of porn history, the best straight porn was clearly better than the best gay porn. Not only that, when I used Xrentdvd, the purchase and rental prices were always 50 percent higher for what I regarded as a lesser product, and not just because straight porn understandably ditched condoms long before gay porn saw a path toward doing so. It was lesser because gay porn was formulaic and unimaginative.

Certain aspects of the comparison are not fair given that the straight people outnumber us. Their industry will always be bigger. But that doesn’t explain why it took so long for the gay industry to embrace guys like President Oaks and Patriarch Smith.
