Mean comments are a form of emotional terrorism and as a character on West Wing said, “When you give in to terrorists, it gives them a pretty good incentive to keep terrorizing.” The best thing to do is ignore. But I responded partly because I was imagining other people reading it and seeing the hostility going seemingly unanswered. I tried to keep my reply civil because I also thought, “Maybe he just doesn’t perceive his comment as mean.” That’s very unlikely, but I did find it interesting that his response to me was not that hostile, and he actually took the time to explain what he meant.
