I wouldn’t necessarily say competitive studios, but a lot of these guys do work for a ton of other studios (the more good looking and popular models get exclusive contracts). I thought Eastern European models were well-known for working for 100s of straight, bi, gay studios?

They definitely have more money considering all the trips they take with 10+ models outside of the Czech Republic/Hungary in comparison to the sad scenes filmed in sad locations at Staxus, for example, but I don’t know if they’re paid any better. I guess a lot of them do scenes for other studios because the 10-15 scenes they film for BA just aren’t cutting it.

It’s Eastern European economics. Work is scarce, wages are very low compared to Western Europe and opportunities are relatively poor for young people. Porn pay rates are American/international so the pay is disproportionately high, it’s considered lucrative. This is why you get a higher standard of looks and a greater proportion of straight men prepared to appear in gay porn. There is sometimes a misconception Eastern Europeans are more sexually liberal which is not true. Most Eastern European countries are still generally rural and quite conservative.
