I think as any parent, you always think to your self “could I have done that one thing better?” It’s a lot of doubt and self reflection.

I’m raising him on my own and we make it work. I only have the support of a few of my family members since being queer is such a big nono for them that they would forgoe getting to know a really cool little boy that likes to draw, goes to museums with me and supports me. It’s beautiful knowing a kid like that has your back and I bring him to class for my night classes once a week and he reads and does homework in the back. It’s amazing seeing him grow up and cheer for me when I do dance competitions and having him hold signs that say “slay! ” and “yas queen”.

But it’s also hard at times because we have to meet each other half way. He’s asking about girls all the time, he got yelled at for eyeing a cashiers breasts unapologetically and he’s at the age where he wants to be like “other boys”. He wants to go to football games, wear pomade in his hair , he’s started to get into my cologne. I’ll be honest and say that a lot of that stuff goes over my head and I’m scared of what might happen if I slip up.

I’ve also made him sign that he’s gonna take care of my old ass! Through years of fighting, I’ve messed up bones and joints and ima pay for it when I’m a golden girl!
