I’m not sure how respectability politics factors into what I wrote. There’s a big difference between saying models like Ace and Landon should make sure their hair and pubes are styled to saying CM’s Maurice should cut his hair to be more appealing. My point is about not allowing a bigoted industry to present or foster an image which diminishes your attributes, because they simply don’t give a fuck. Like how certain studios will have Black models looking they bathed in cocoa butter. Or how Gay Hoopla will have Tyler Smith looking ashy in every vid. Or how LE will have Sean Xavier dressed up in silly costumes. When you’re a model of color in this industry, you have to take your image into your own hands.

I think it more because studios don’t know what to do to enhance the appearance of black models via grooming and filming . So I get putting your appearance in your own hands.

Well in some cases I’ve always suspected they do know what to do, but choose not to do it. That way when the model of color isn’t well-received they can turn around and say “The members have spoken.”
