More specific about what, when I can tell that something creative has changed hands behind the scenes? I'm thinking of a lot of little moments throughout my life. I used to eat pizza a couple of times a week at a restaurant in my neighborhood, and I like my pizza a certain way. I began to notice that some days the pizza was a 10/10, and others, I was disappointed. In my typical way (you're talking to the guy who made a spreadsheet of all my favorite Sean Cody and Corbin Fisher creampies), I became very analytical about it, and one day I went into the restaurant and said to the manager, "Is there a specific person who makes the pizza on Tuesday nights?" He burst out laughing because he had gotten to know me over the years, so it didn't surprise him that I had analyzed the food enough to accurately detect personnel changes in the kitchen. He told me the name of that pizza chef, and for years, I'd call and they'd tell me if he was in the kitchen that night or not.

I was also thinking about this in the context of The Devil Wears Prada, a very good but not great film. Miranda's speech about the blue sweater and Nigel's one about how many girls are "dying" to work here while you only "deign" to work here — those scenes are on a level far above the clumsy scenes in the same film involving Andrea's conflicts with her boyfriend and friends. They pull the movie in a competing direction such that Miranda and Nigel are more persuasive than the characters we're supposed to be siding with in the end. I can tell it's a case of a writing team that is not working in harmony to produce one flawlessly coherent script.

I was a huge fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. There's a correlation between the most loved episodes of that series and the writers assigned to those episodes. There were times in my life when even as a kid I could identify a songwriter or producer the first time I heard a song, regardless of the artist. Again, I'm not saying I'm exceptional though I would probably credit myself with being a bit above average due to my excessive attention to detail. I am saying that in the last ten years, the porn industry has repeatedly experienced takeovers of brands and subjected us to changes in quality and aesthetic that they were trying to camouflage, but for dedicated fans the declines are fully legible.

Look at that one year when Cocksuremen had guys like Park Wiley, Pat Bateman, Jeremy Bilding, and Leo Giamani. That was the original meaning of "pump and dump" — Jake Cruise used those guys to pump up the value of the subscription, built a fan base, and then those guys were replaced by more mediocre stock. I don't know the specifics of when he owned the company and when he stepped away, but it's not hard to guess from looking at the patterns of casting.
