Right or wrong, a lot of black urban males refer to themselves as ‘thugs’ as well as other disparaging terms such as the N-word.

I’m not quite sure what constitutes “a lot” but every group has words they use to describe other people within that group. There’s nothing inherently wrong with that. When people outside that group start throwing those terms around like it’s okay, that’s when things become problematic.

So it’s okay for blacks to refer to themselves as ‘niggers’ or ‘niggas’, but it’s not for others outside of that racial group? Either the term is taboo, or it’s not. It’s either reprehensible, or its not.

By ‘a lot’, I mean a considerable sum. Just look at the high African-American male incarceration rate. The black community has a problem and acting like ‘thugs’ and listening to weaponized hip-hop music that promotes drug dealing, prostitution and murder isn’t helping.

Some of the black community’s problems are whitey’s fault…but some of it is their own fault. Until they realize that, and some of them do, their decline will continue. Which is unfortunate.

Wow. The fact that you actually had the audacity to type those words out tells me all I need to know. But against my better judgment I’ll explain something that you refuse to acknowledge. EVERY group has words they use to denote other people within that group. Blacks. Whites. Italians. Asians. Jewish. Women. Gays. And on and on. It’s not my place to police words that another group is using. It’s also not my place to come in and start using those same words like that shit is okay. It’s not. And really, if you think a word is so terrible, why would you want to use it in the first place? Is it simply because you’re told you shouldn’t? How is your every day life affected by not being given a pass to toss out whatever group specific terms you want?

Please don’t try to educate me about my culture. And please don’t try to act like incarceration, drug dealing, prostitution and murder are only problems in the Black community. Your agenda is clear as day, and your tactics are rudimentary. If you want to be a bigot, be a bigot. Don’t hide behind statistics and righteous indignation. Have a blessed day.

Name one non-Hip-Hop form of music that glorifies all three of these; prostitution, drug dealing and murder.

And you need to realize that the black community exists in places other than the inner cities and even in those inner cities, black people are managing to keep their youth safe. And oh, by the way, that struggle to keep youth safe in tough environments crosses many a racial line, including rural America where many white Americans are dealing with rampant addiction problems along with crippling poverty. Only, in their case it’s being cast as a health crisis brought on by an economic crisis, not the moral failure justification thrust upon black and other minority communities. This reality far predates the rap music (of which I am not a huge fan) that many people believe causes and glorifies it.
