I’ve been more than a lititle annoyed since the election by the implicit and overt accusations of bigotry and privliege that get thrown at those of us who did not vote for Hillary. I’m gay. My BF is hispanic (and about to go into the military). Several family members and I have chronic health issues that would probably kill us (SD slowly and very painfully in my case) were we to lose easy access to medical care. Maybe there are some of us out there simply thinking “lol, fuck the system”, and I don’t know how Colby is even classified as a “protest vote” when he voted for Trump, but I for one voted the way I did BECAUSE I care about the same people and issues you do, not in spite of those concerns. I just don’t see things quite the same way that you (or Colby) do when it comes to helping those people and addressing the issues.

Hmm… I seem to have worded that a bit poorly, having just gotten off the night shift. To clarify, I didn’t vote for Trump, either. Setting aside some local elections where there were no other options, I haven’t voted for a Democrat or Republican since 2008. This past election, I got a ton of hate not for voting for Trump, but merely for failing to vote for Hillary.

I could go into a long rant here – especially given that I’m still a bit worn out from working last night – but the gist of it is that I don’t see progress and improvement as something that can happen within the current two party system. And, awful as Trump is, I don’t see him as being likely to cause a great deal of lasting harm, as he’s either going to have to fall in line with the rest of the GOP (who will likely lose power over the next few elections) or he’s going to crash and burn in a spectacular fashion.

That said, when it got to the final days of the election, I literally had people calling me racist, misgynistic, xenophobic, homophobic when it was absolutely clear that I was planning to vote third party. It was more than a little maddening, but the silver lining has been that I feel as though it’s made me much more objective. Trump definitely has his share of bigoted supporters, but there are others who’re basically decent people, and who just see him as an alternative to the status quo. They’re foolish for thinking that (Trump is basically the worst aspects of the status quo in concentrated form) but they’re not evil, and they’re certainly not going to see their mistake because you call them bigots.

I don’t think he has that much conservatives support at the moment – at least if the CPAC cancellation says anything. What annoys me is that conservatives will probably just see this as more evidence for their “gay = pedophile” nonsense.

For me it mostly comes down to the fact that I’m not just looking at any one election. Johnson and Stein are both idiots, but neither was actually going to win anyway, and voting for one is mostly about increasing third party turnout in one election in the hope of making future third party candidates seem more plausible.

If I was looking at just this election, yes Hillary was obviously the better choice despite her imperfections, but in the long run she’s part of the same dysfunctional, bitterly divided system that produced Trump, and will continue to produce Trumps as time goes on.

Even some republicans had the decency of voting strategically; the more power to them.

I literally just explained why I’d vote for an idiot over Clinton. Clinton is part of an ongoing cycle of increasing corruption (remember when we all used to talk about reforming campaign finance?), politics over principals, and above all else a voting public which is bitterly divided and to busy fighting the other “side” to hold their elected representatives accountable for anything. I
don’t particularly agree with the term “protest vote”, given that I honestly believe that we’d probably be better off in the long run with one of the idiots than either Clinton or Trump, but if you must call it that on the grounds that, fine.

What I take issue with is that you’re insisting that it’s a vote that comes from a place of privliege. I am (obviously) care about gay rights, I care about whether my boyfriend feels comfortable and respected in this country, I care about the rights of women and trans people and muslims. And believe me, I really don’t relish the idea of being stripped of rights and dignity for being gay, or losing my health coverage and being left to fall into a major depressive episode, bloating up due to lack of thyroid medication, and ultimately dying of a massive kidney infection while I watch the gun toting bible thumpers install a Christian theocracy and deport everyone with brown skin. I’m not denying that I have many types privilege, but I vote the way I do because I do not believe that the Democrats can save me or anyone else from the Trumps of the world. They’re part of the system that spawned him in the first place. You don’t have to agree with that assessment, but please don’t tell me that I voted the way I did because I have the benefit of not caring. If I didn’t care I wouldn’t have voted at all (and it would have had the exact same impact on the number of votes Clinton and Trump recieved).
