Just to correct you, you specifically said, “colored people,” which is a slur. Person of color, model of color, are acceptable terms. “Colored person” is not, and stems from Jim Crow laws (racist laws that reinforced segregation). English is my second language, but I understand the nuance.

I’ll skip making any and all assumptions like you did and just ask you, how old are you?

Regardless of either of those two data points, just because there were bigger fish to fry and larger cattle to tend to in prior “generations”, doesn’t mean we don’t all need to go back and sweep up whatever mess is still left out there…and micro-aggressions is one of the things still left out there.

The bigger issue that my comment is targeting is the idea that one has made and come to their own decisions about who they think they are attracted to. When those decisions were made for them by society who slapped white men on every magazine cover and at the top of every box office movie, calling them heartthrobs. While pretending that people of color were second thoughts and minor supporting characters in media.

But I’ll take your note, labeling me a snowflake, and I’ll add it to the pile of I don’t care that you think it’s humorous for me to call out an issue, because it wasn’t as tragic as another.

I just googled ‘should the NAACP change its name?’ and got a lot of results discussing its history and the context for the name. Similarly, I just googled ‘why is colored people offensive?’ and got the same. I’m not black, or a person of colour, so I’m cool letting people do the research and read up from black (and other non-white) sources. And the fact that I am aware of when someone is being targeted doesn’t mean that I assume that this person (or group) is always being victimized. It isn’t all or nothing.

I live in Southeast Asia and I have to deal with all kinds of problems here too. But from one foreigner to another, I am telling you… what you’re saying is problematic as hell. Doesn’t matter whether it’s micro or macro aggression. At the end of the day, that is still a problem. Also, It’s never okay to make fun of other people’s struggles just ’cause you feel yours is a lot worse. And just ’cause black people’s problems do not affect you directly doesn’t mean it’s okay to belittle their struggles. Remember, in the eyes of a racist bigot, you and I are just the same as the next black person. A little bit of understanding and empathy on other people’s plight won’t hurt you, you know.
