I guess just to add to what he said, what the studio basically did here is they stereotyped an Asian model by playing the kind of music ignorant people associate with Asians. Also, this studio has a habit of referring to black models as “ebony” and brown models as “tan”. Mind you, not once did they call a white model “ivory” nor made any reference to the color of his skin. You see, this kind of bias on marginalized groups is the reason why it was so offensive. Generalizing an entire group of people and putting a label to it is a not-so hidden insult against that group. Overt racism isn’t the only kind of racism, you know.

Glad that you’re interested in learning more about diversity. As you can see on this thread, there are bigots here who refuse to acknowledge the studio’s microaggression and even made light of the situation by joking about it. Instead of trying to understand how these actions are hurtful to people of color, they easily dismiss it because they are not directly affected by these stereotypes. Don’t be like them.

Only thing I can say to that is that “oriental” isn’t a frowned-upon term in Europe like it is in the US. Asians in Asia don’t even really care about it, from my experience.

To my mind it’s very simple – if it had been a black actor, even if he had a tattoo of say, Yoruba art, and they played African tribal music, they’d have been in a huge shitstorm. There’s no reason a studio should be applying different procedures to models who are already considered “others.” This entire community is an “otherized” community.
