When I heard Sam Shepard died, I immediately thought of Julia as Darby Shaw. They also crossed paths in August Osage (not a good film), but they made out in PB.

Yeah, he’s a loss for sure. They were also both in Steel Magnolias, and I loved his performance in both SM and AOC. We didn’t think AOC was bad or not good; but it clearly was not as deep, full as the play (which I suspect is the case with SM).
Sam Shepard sure had THE RIGHT STUFF. I also liked him in BABY BOOM, as the town veterinarian. The only other film that you and Billy didn’t name that I can think of to recommend is The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Features a beautiful cast and beautiful cinematography. I think it should have won the cinematography Oscar but that was 2007, a year with impossible standards. There Will Be Blood won cinematography and No Country for Old Men won BP.
Sam played Jesse’s brother.
