For most guys being hiv+ isn’t a big deal. The meds work great, they eat healthy and look good for a very long time. But, some guys have nasty side effects to the meds. I know that from personal experience. Last year I started taking prep. In less than a year I started to develop fatty liver due to Truvada. Fatty liver leads to early death. Luckily for me I was taking it just to feel safer. I was able to quickly get off it and everything went back to normal. An hiv+ person does not have that luxury. If I was hiv+ I’d likely die early due to fatty liver because my body does not respond well to HIV meds. My doctor told me that the main ingredient in Truvada is the same in all hiv medications.

This is a topic few talk about. Yes, for most the meds work great, but for the ones that experience nasty side effects, getting hiv breaks down their body quick.

Before anyone asks, I don’t drink and don’t use drugs. Never have, never will. The fatty liver developed due to Truvada. I’m back to normal though, I was taken off it quickly when she noticed I was starting to develop fatty liver.

My brother is an AIDS researcher, and I do a lot of work with AIDS related charities. This topic comes up often, as few understand the two simple concepts you’ve brought out here.
1) Truvada is an HIV treatment medication;
and
2) Like all anti-retrovirals, catastrophic side effects can occur (in the case of Truvada, lacto-acidosis is most common and is fatal if unchecked, and second is impaired liver functioning, as you experienced).

It’s generally fortunate that we’re learning techniques to enable people to avoid infection; but they’re not foolproof, and they’re also not for everyone.

(My knowledge is purely as a dilettante – my brother is a researcher, and my husband and I do a lot of work with local HIV/AIDS charities and the men/women whom they serve, so I’ve picked up a lot.)

Yes, those ingredients are present in multiple fixed dose antiretroviral combinations and are also taken separately. But they are just one class (reverse transcriptase inhibitors) of HIV antiretrovirals out of many. They certainly aren’t present in “all hiv medications.” And if his doctor told him that…

Wyler is really quite the wordsmith but he lacks veracity. Remember when he accused an active duty solder of battering him in his own apartment? Both comments are not equals. My comment was based on personal experience that I’ve had with hiv medications (Truvada). It happened to me and that’s why I mentioned it.

I do like to mention the side effects often whenever the topic comes up because way too many guys are currently going on prep without thinking much of the side effects. They should research more about side effect before going on it. Gay men often just talk about the positive aspects of being on prep, rarely do they talk about the side effects.

I think you misinterpreted what I said. You felt I was saying he looked old because he was dying of aids or that he looked old because he was hiv+. I wouldn’t say that because I know its not accurate. I know several hiv+ people that look great. All my comments were about the side effects to hiv medications.
