Stranger Danger was a thing, but the 80s was still more laid back. Kids stayed out unsupervised until the street lights came on. You could go door to door selling candy. Things you wouldn’t let your kids do now. As for the mother issue, I always assumed she didn’t want the police to get involved, on account of that not being the first time Jimmy ran away. That coupled with the not talking would’ve sent all sorts of CPS red flags. The father had the right idea by bringing along fine ass Christian Slater.
